Gujarat Facing legal Issues in PG Admissions: Students want admissions based on NEET Scores

Ahmedabad: As many as 99 medical students filed a petition in the Gujarat high court on Wednesday regarding the pattern of admission in the postgraduate course to medical colleges affiliated to various universities in the state. This comes close on the heels of the petition filed by the students of MS and Bhavnagar universities. The students mainly demanded preference during admission based on scores obtained by them in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Neet) examination conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI). “After hearing our petition, Justice Paresh Upadhyay issued notices to the state government and Gujarat University (GU) while fixing June 12 as the next date of hearing,” said senior counsel DC Dave, who appeared with counsel Nimesh Patel on behalf of the students. “We have demanded preference for the students of medical colleges affiliated to GU while granting admission in postgraduate courses based on the Neet scores obtained by the students,” said Da

Gujarat PG admissions facing legal battle

The issue of admission in post-graduate medical courses has been trapped in a legal battle as many students have filed petitions in the Gujarat high court (HC). A couple of students, who studied MBBS in colleges affiliated to Bhavnagar University in Bhavnagar and MS University in Vadodara, have demanded conduct of admission based on marks obtained by them in MBBS. On the other side, a group of MBBS students of MS University have protested the petitions and sought admission based on Neet score. The HC is likely to hear the matter after June 10. Meanwhile, the state government plans to place all medical colleges of different universities in the state under a single umbrella and admit students through a centralised admission system. The government lawyer, on Monday, stated before the HC that the state might abolish the system of giving admission based on merit list prepared with marks obtained by students in MBBS. Instead, the state might adopt a uniform policy of giving admission th

Health ministry sources said that a formal notification about the reconstitution would be issued on Friday. The new seven-member board, approved by health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, will have a term of six months within which MCI elections will be held and the original democratic structure restored. The government has already moved a new bill which is yet to be passed, sources said. "The term of the last Board of Governors expired on May 13, necessitating an ordinance to form a new board until Parliament passes the new Indian Medical Council Amendment Act, which provides for the restoration of elected MCI and fixes the tenure of its President to root out corruption," said a senior official. Gujarat plans to increases bond amount for UGs and PGs

Ups bond for MBBS students from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5lakh; levies Rs 10 lakh bond for PG medical students, who dont want to work for 3 yrs in rural areas. State government has decided to increase the bond value for MBBS students from Rs1.5 lakh to Rs5 lakh, with the hope that this will dissuade qualified doctors in rural areas of Gujarat to move to urban pastures. It has also introduced bond of Rs10 lakh for the post-graduate (PG) medical students. MBBS and PG students, studying into the govt or grant-in-aid medical colleges at nominal fees are supposed to do their internship in the state government-run health centres. As these centres are mostly located in rural areas, 70% of MBBS students studying in government-run institutes prefer to pay up Rs1.5 lakh than go there for internship. Talking about the move government spokesperson and state health minister Nitin Patel said, “State government was well aware of this practice by MBBS students, who would opt out of their rural internsh

NEET PG: ALL India Rank & State Rank demystified

There are many students who after seeing their NEET PG results are confused about their ranks in NEET PG. So we are trying to simplify the concept here for the people to understand better. Lets see..... First of all NEET is a eligibility test for the admission to PG courses. NEET PG provided 3 ranks to many students and 2 ranks to some. These are All India rank State 1 Rank State 2 Rank Now lets take some examples. Dr M, who is domicile of Rajasthan, and did his Graduation from Karnataka. He will be provided with AIR, State1 Rank - Rajasthan, and State 2 Rank - Karnataka. But according to rules in Rajasthan, only State MBBS candidates are eligible so Dr. M will be eligible for the counselling of 50% AI Quota and Karnataka State Quota counselling. He will not be listed in the final list prepared for Rajasthan state quota counselling. Dr N, who is a domicile of Karnataka and did MBBS from Rajasthan He will be provided with AIR, State1 Rank - Karnataka, an

Private Colleges taking advantage of NEET fiasco, Fees skyrocketing

The annual PG sale is on! After the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, Post-Graduate (NEET-PG) results were announced on Thursday, the capitation fee for admission against 300-odd management quota seats in self-financed medical colleges, was reported to be between Rs 50 lakh and Rs one crore, depending upon the branch! It needs mention that there are 1500 PG medicalseats in Gujarat. Of these, 300 are management quota seats while 1200 are in government-run colleges where 50 per cent seats are reserved for students from the all-India quota. With seats shrinking and demand rising, some self-financed colleges are allegedly already bargaining with students and asking for huge amounts to book a seat in advance in the best branches. While a majority of the self-financed colleges follow merit even in charging capitation fee, there are at least two colleges who allegedly feed off the desperation of students to get into a particular medical branch. The most popular branches currently are r

NEET PG SC case Official Interim Order

This is the highlights Interim Order Issued by CJI on NEET case on 13th May 2013. 3. On 13th December, 2012, when the matters were taken up for  consideration, we decided to post the matters for final hearing on 15th,16th and 17th January, 2013, and allowed the respective entrance examinations, which had already been notified, to be held, while the hearing progressed. Such examinations included the National Eligibility Entrance Test  (NEET) for both MBBS and Post-Graduate courses in different disciplines, as also the BDS and MDS examinations. Presuming that the hearing would be completed on the dates indicated, we had directed that the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council of India, as well as the States and Universities and other institutions, would be entitled to conduct their respective examinations for the MBBS, BDS and Post-Graduate courses, but the results of the examinations were not to be declared until further orders of the Court. Consequently, although, the exami

SC gives Interim Order for NEET case, States, institutes can declare results

From IBN Live New Delhi:  The Supreme Court has directed medical colleges to declare all pending Post Graduate results, which were stayed by the December 13, 2012, order. However, this is only an interim arrangement for this year and a final judgement will be delivered by the Supreme Court in the first week of July. The Supreme Court has also left the option of following the NEET result on the colleges. This means that the colleges who want to follow the NEET results for admissions can do the same and the colleges who want to admit students on the basis of their independent exams are free to do so. This makes NEET a voluntary admission process for colleges. The court order comes more than a month after a CNN-IBN sting operation exposed how PG medical seats were being sold in black in clear violation of a Supreme Court order. It was the students who were caught in the line of fire. A Supreme Court order had put a stay on the admission process pending its NEET verdict leaving the

After DNB CET results, students praying for a Single day Entrance Exam

NBE declared the result of DNB CET Nov 2012 session result yesterday evening. The result came as a shock for many. The ranks were not at all according to the performance says many students on different forums. Students say that its due the unreasonable scaling used by prometric for deciding the score. Its like a lottery and the hard work of students is not evaluated in this system. One student say - My friend got a rank of within 40 in AIIMS and PGI exam of Nov-Dec session and his CET Nov rank is above 10000. This clearly shows that the ranking system of prometric is faulty Students now praying that SC gives a verdict in which there is a provision of single day single session exam which will not undermine the ranking system. It appears that the Scaling system and psychometric analysis used by prometric for various exams like GMAT, CAT etc, is not successful in PG entrance exams in India. and students are definitely not liking it.
