Kalicharan Saraf, Rajasthan Higher Education Minister, said on Tuesday that the Jodhpur University might be dissolved by the state government since they handed out 25,003 fake degrees and a high-level committee stated that there were high irregularities there.
Saraf told a national daily, "The distribution of fake degrees is presently being probed by the Special Operations Group (SOG) even as the department has set up a high-level committee to probe the irregularities. The committee is expected to submit its report and depending on the recommendation, the state government will decide whether to dissolve the institute or to appoint an administrator.'' He also said that the state watch silently to what was happening at the university.
BJP legislator Ghanshyam Tiwari raised the question pertaining to action against the university and the probe regarding the fake degrees scam. He also asked for the institute to be shut down. As a reply to these questions, Saraf said that the Special Operations Group had investigated a total of 38,000 degrees that the university had issued out of which 25,003 turned out to be fake.
Saraf also expanded on the issue saying that in the probe it was found that the Vice-Chancellor Kamal Mehta and other officials were involved in the scam. The officials were arrested but the action against those who had bought the degree, without attending any exam or classes, would be taken after the completion of the probe. He answered BJP MLA Jogaram Patel's supplementary question by telling him that the university could be asked to remove the word 'National' from their name if required. When asked another question by Congress MLA Shakuntala Rawat about private colleges, he answered that private institutions would not be allowed since the government did not have enough funds or resources to the number of colleges required.
